Bettys Tea Room was founded in 1919 by Frederick Belmont, a Swiss confectioner. Belmont had previously worked in Switzerland and France before moving to England to start his own business in 1907.

A Swiss-owned confectioner, Bonnet & Sons, hired him when he arrived in Yorkshire. Eventually, he settled in Harrogate, establishing himself as a ‘Chocolate Specialist’. In July 1919, with the financial support of his wife’s family, the first Bettys opened for business.

Bettys Tea Room Harrogate’s interior design and decor are classic and elegant. The tea room is decorated in the style of the 1920s and 1930s, with art deco features and beautiful stained glass windows. The tea room is spacious and well-lit, with comfortable seating and a warm and welcoming atmosphere. The walls are adorned with vintage photographs and artwork, adding to the charm and character of the establishment.

The tea room has several sections, each with a unique ambiance and decor. The main dining area is bright and airy, with large windows that let in plenty of natural light. The tea room also has a private dining area perfect for special occasions and events. The private dining area is decorated in a more intimate and romantic style, with soft lighting and plush seating.

Reservations For Bettys Tea Room Harrogate

If you’ve never visited the flagship team room and do not have a reservation, you may or may not get in! – especially on a weekend. The lines outside Bettys Tea Room in Harrogate are as famous as the establishment. We went on a Monday, so fortunately, the lines were not long, and we got straight in.

Fortunately, you can make a reservation by phone or online in advance, which is highly recommended.

Afternoon Tea

Once a British tradition, afternoon tea has become a trend worldwide. In the mid-19th century, Afternoon Tea became a popular concept. Afternoon Tea was introduced in 1840 by Anna, 7th Duchess of Bedford. The Duchess got hungry in the afternoon around four o’clock, and the evening meal wasn’t until eight. As a result, there was a long gap between lunch and dinner.

If there was one reason alone to visit Bettys, it was for the afternoon tea! Afternoon tea typically includes sandwiches with the crust cut off and cut into diamond shapes, scones with clotted cream and jam, sweet pastries, and cakes. It’s served on a fancy layered cake tray. Be prepared to splurge; afternoon tea starts at £39.95 per person.

Signature Cakes and Pastries

One of Bettys Tea Room’s highlights is its signature cakes and pastries selection. The Fat Rascal is a must-try and is a cross between a scone and a rock cake. Ask to see the cake tray. The waitress or waiter will bring over an opulent tray full of the day over-the-top cakes served that day.

Suppose you want something exotic, try Bettys Strawberry, Cherry & Rose Tisane, or Bettys Special Rare Green Tea. There are hundreds of teas to choose from. Bettys also offers a wide variety of coffee and fancy soft drinks.

And, tea is no ordinary tea at Betty’s. It served with a tea pot stainer and all. The tradition is a pot is filled with fresh boiling water and tea leaves, infusers, or bags, and allowed to steep for two to five minutes. Using loose tea, brew the tea in a tea strainer placed over the top of the cup and pour into the cup. Upon reaching the desired strength, the infuser or tea bag may be removed.
